Over the past months, Japanese artist duo OSOTO lab. has explored the unique qualities of Dutch light during their artist residency at ARE. Fascinated by the way light moves and shifts in the Netherlands, they created a performative installation that will be on view at ARE starting August 13. OSOTO lab. is known for their ability to translate natural elements like wind and light into subtle, kinetic installations that blend seamlessly into their surroundings.

Opening: 13.08.2025, 17:30-20:00

To experience the light at its best, the opening will take place at 17:30. As it coincides with dinnertime, food will be provided during the event.

This work began with a fleeting reflection—
a single arc of light appearing like a rainbow on a white wall in Enschede.
It was a moment shaped by the land’s solar angle, material, and time.
Inspired by the city’s weaving history, we explored how brushed metal can guide light like warp threads.
As the surface moves with wind, sunlight forms ephemeral patterns.
Just as Jacquard looms used punched cards to control textile design, this installation is woven by nature’s rhythm—sun, wind, and clouds.
A quiet intersection of chance and structure, where light becomes a textile of time.

OSOTO lab. is a collaborative project by Tokyo-based artists Takatoku Nishi and Yumeo Nakayama. Inspired by outdoor experiences, they explore uncontrollable natural forces through spatial installations using simple materials. Their works aim to evoke organic rhythms and curiosity toward nature.
