PHOTOMAT

Last summer colleagues Peters and Jonkman crossed paths — unexpectedly, and in two different places. Peters was spending a few carefree weeks in Italy, reading and taking occasional snapshots of nature, while Jonkman was exploring his favourite city of Berlin, fixated on capturing urban life. What neither of them knew was that they were both drawn to the same quirky object: a Photoautomat — those old-school photo booths scattered across European cities.

Somehow, on the same afternoon, both Peters and Jonkman ended up trying to use a Photoautomat. But through some glitch the machines malfunctioned. Or maybe they connected. It’s still unclear. The machines then began printing photos. These were hybrid images, layered and stitched together. Urban scenes in the forest, trees in unexpected places… Both were stunned to get these strange, but partly familiar images from their Photoautomat.

When returning from their holidays they showed the other what had happened during their days off from work, and to their great surprise they saw their own photographs, merged with those of the other. From that moment, ‘Photoautomat’ was born — not just a series of images, but an exhibition, a conversation, and a project exploring place, connection, and the beautiful accidents of old tech.
