About the Exhibition

Duo exhibition "Mutilate & Modify" presents a multimedia installation by Emily Ghazal and Rosa Zangenberg. 

Both of their artistic practices question the truth-making and invisible processes that images tend to enforce, both make the instability of the image present through altering their presumed neutrality. Emily mutilates and Rosa modifies; they consider images as objects that do not merely exist by themselves but which happen via transmission of a medium and perception of a body. 

For this duo exhibition at Black Brick they bring the message that we, as viewers, are represented in the image as well. Through their respective mediums and methods, we present processes of image production that reveal their active and constantly changing nature.
Emily explores the transmission of images and their data, the oftentimes hidden but impactful weight of their travel, virtually as well as physically, and the responsibility receivers have once they view an image that was transmitted to them. 

Rosa works with a method of opacity, advocating for the right for an image to remain unreadable, believing that bringing an aesthetics of opacity into our language of reading images is important in a time where transparency is an exhausted statement inside a seemingly irreversible hegemonic order of difference in the world.
