The exhibit
Between 2020 and 2024, visual artist LUVANE created more than 200 illustrations for the promotion of public lectures, discussion, interviews and other events at the University of Twente and in the city of Enschede. This exhibition showcases a selection of illustrations that were originally used for advertising via programme booklets, digital billboards and social media. Prints identical to the ones exhibited can be ordered online in the official LUVANE shop.
Through this travelling exhibition, LUVANE hopes to inspire others to lend their graphic skills for advertising, and to encourage organizations and individuals to make use of those services. With the rise of generative AI cheap and quick alternatives have become available. We need to ask ourselves though, to which extent do we want AI-generated text and images to represent us when communicating? And will we lose our ability to properly communicate if we allow AI to fill in for us?
The artist
LUVANE is a cartoonist, illustrator and graphic designer based in Enschede, the Netherlands. Starting out as an editorial cartoonist for University of Twente's newspaper U-Today in 2016, he gradually moved towards science communication and advertising for public events. In many of his works, the aim is to capture the essence of a topic, while adding a small humorous, thought-provoking or tender twist to it.
Besides cartoons, illustrations or for example cover art for printed media, LUVANE loves to work on public artworks. A tribute to poet Willem Wilmink and composer Harry Bannink in the form of street art can be found at the conservatory in Enschede. Wall art capturing student life can be spotted at various outdoor locations on the University of Twente campus.
