About the exhibition
The exhibition is a coming-of-age story frozen in its opening scenes. Through assemblage, photography, and performance, the work explores the lingering shadows of early-life adversity, not as a resolved narrative, but as an ongoing, bewildering feedback loop. Here, in contrast with the traditional bildungsroman, the protagonist does not triumph or transcend; they remain suspended, their identity fragmented by the echoes of what came before. Generational trauma is an invisible inheritance, silently transmitted but pervasive, its impact transcending the sociopolitical and the psychological. Scientific research shows that exposure to domestic abuse in utero can alter brain development, rewiring emotional and social responses, leaving a legacy of hypervigilance and fear. These biological imprints ripple outward, influencing behaviour and relationships, often laying the groundwork for history to repeat itself through vicious cycles of dysfunction. Yet this is not just a story of damage. It is a reckoning, an act of self-creation. The works invite viewers to witness the tension between what is inherited and what is chosen, between the weight of the past and the fragile possibility of agency.
